Pure Essence and Sword Mounds Explained

Where Pure Essence actually comes from in The Scroll of Taiwu 1.0, how the two-phase Sword Mound fight awards it, and why you do not need to power up before challenging the boss.

The short version: essence comes from Sword Mounds

Pure Essence (精纯) is a generational martial-arts level that scales much of your combat power, including your True Qi cap. For the Taiwu heir, there is one main way to raise it: conquer Sword Mounds (剑冢) by defeating the Xiangshu Incarnation (相枢化身) sealed inside each one.

This trips up a lot of new players because Taiwu starts with the trait 'Fractured Pure Essence' (精纯破碎). Your essence is deliberately broken at the start, and the Sword Mounds are how you restore it. Grinding ordinary fights, finishing the tutorial chapters, or waiting around will not raise it — the mounds are the source.

  • Pure Essence is restored by conquering Sword Mounds, not by normal combat.
  • Taiwu begins with 'Fractured Pure Essence' on purpose — the mounds are the cure.
  • Other (non-Taiwu) characters raise essence differently: through their Martial Arts Attainment, capped monthly.

How the Sword Mound fight actually awards essence

Each Sword Mound ends in a fight against its Xiangshu Incarnation, and that fight has two phases. The first time you beat the incarnation down, it is not over: all of its removable Defeat Markers clear and it enters a 'Divine Sword Unsheathed' state. You only truly kill it by defeating it a second time while it is in that state.

That two-phase structure is exactly what controls the essence reward, and it is worth getting right because the older Early Access explanations no longer match 1.0:

Defeating the full Xiangshu Incarnation (both phases) grants 2 Pure Essence. Defeating only its first phase grants 1 Pure Essence. Repeatedly beating just the first phase does not award any more — that single point is the cap for the first phase. Beating a Moundbreaker (破冢者), the incarnation that crawls out toward your village, grants no Pure Essence at all.

  • Full kill (both phases) = +2 Pure Essence.
  • First phase only = +1 Pure Essence (and only once — re-clearing the first phase gives nothing extra).
  • Moundbreaker kills give no Pure Essence, no invasion progress, and no Divine Sword Shard.
  • Conquering a mound also grants its Divine Sword Shard and Sword Mound legacy art.

Essence vs Essence Level — what the number does

Pure Essence and your Pure Essence Level are two different things. Every 2 points of Pure Essence raise your Pure Essence Level by 1. The level ladder runs Clear Mind (2) → Body Purification (4) → Qi Regulation (6) → Qi Fullness (8) → Spirit Fullness (10) → Primordial Absorption (12) → Soul Egression (14) → Transcendent Realm (16) → Void Return (18).

Each level raises your True Qi cap and adds combat bonuses, so essence is one of the biggest long-run power levers you have. One side effect to know about: as your Pure Essence rises, Xiangshu's Invasion Progress across the world rises too, so progress is a trade-off rather than a free power-up.

  • 2 Pure Essence = 1 Pure Essence Level.
  • Higher levels raise your True Qi cap and grant combat bonuses.
  • Rising essence also pushes world Invasion Progress upward.

Common misconceptions

Two myths cause most of the early confusion. The first is that the 'Taiwu Martial Arts' (太吾演武) trials raise essence — they do not. That mode is the game's tutorial chapter story (Vol. 1–4) and will not appear as a quest in your journal; clearing it does not move your essence at all.

The second is the feeling that you must power up before you are 'allowed' to fight the Sword Mound boss. You do not. The mound is the source, so fighting it is how you power up: clear the first phase for +1, come back stronger, and finish both phases for the full +2. If the boss is wiping you instantly, that is usually a combat-fundamentals problem (range, weapon-art matching, fighting injured) rather than a sign you are locked out.

  • Taiwu Martial Arts (太吾演武) is the tutorial story chapter, not an essence source.
  • You are not expected to out-level the mound first — the mound is the level-up.
  • Repeatedly farming a first phase will not stack essence beyond the single point.

FAQ

Where does Pure Essence come from for the Taiwu?

From conquering Sword Mounds. Defeating the Xiangshu Incarnation inside a mound grants Pure Essence; ordinary fights, the tutorial chapters, and simply waiting do not raise it. Taiwu starts with the 'Fractured Pure Essence' trait, and the mounds are how you restore it.

Do I get essence if I only beat the first phase of the boss?

Yes — defeating only the first phase grants 1 Pure Essence, and defeating the full two-phase incarnation grants 2. But re-clearing the first phase over and over does not award any more than that one point, so to gain further essence you have to finish the second phase or move to another mound.

Why can't I beat the 4-essence Sword Mound boss early?

That is by design — the world does not scale down to you, and meeting an over-tuned mound early means 'come back later,' not 'you are stuck.' A practical plan is to clear the first phase for +1 essence, build up, then return to finish it for the full reward.

Does the Taiwu Martial Arts (太吾演武) tutorial raise essence?

No. Taiwu Martial Arts is the tutorial chapter story mode (Vol. 1–4), not a source of Pure Essence. It will not show up as a quest, and clearing it will not change your essence.

Does beating the Moundbreaker give essence?

No. Defeating a Moundbreaker grants a Sword Mound Insight but no Pure Essence, no invasion progress, and no Divine Sword Shard. Pure Essence only comes from conquering the Sword Mound's Xiangshu Incarnation.
